Blog Tour Review+Giveaway: "Flames of Auriel" by Erin R. Bedford

Flames of Auriel by Erin R. Bedford
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

When living in a world where the prince isn’t always charming, the princess has a mean right hook, and angels are worshiped like gods, love isn’t always easy to find.
Zoe has never been the lady-like princess she's read about in fairy-tales, even with her very own handsome prince to sweep her off her feet. She doesn't know what she dislikes more, his arrogant smirk or the way his grey eyes darken when they fight. Angels help him if he thinks he could tame her.
Asher won't admit it, but he admires the fighting style of his warrior princess. She reminds him of an avenging angel the way her fiery hair whips around her as she takes out her challengers. Dark One help him, but she is as tough an opponent on the battlefield as she is off.
With unknown and unwanted feelings starting to emerge between the two royals, a single goodbye turns into a frantic search for a missing princess. Asher has to find the one woman he never thought he’d miss and keep his kingdom safe from an old enemy. If he fails, the angels may not forgive him this time.

REVIEW

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a fine example of a very talented indie author. To my persoanl experience is sad that there are so many indie authors out there with amazing stories, yet they are not well known, either because their book covers are not publishing-industry-worthy or because they get lost into the masses.

Yet, Erin Bedford creates a story in which the Prince is a jerk, the princess kicks ass and the whole plot is a race into the unknown! Filled with funny moments, omance and a well made world building Flames of Auriel is a great read in case you want something light and quick to read. Yet the characters will remain with you!

                                                                   EXCREPT

“Can you believe him? How could he be with her? Her of all people!” She slammed her fist against the cracked wood of the sill. She flinched when some of the wood bit into her skin; the pain only fed into her anger.
“He could have showed up with any other princess, hell even that cousin of his would have been better than that…that…I’m so angry I can’t even think of a decent word to describe her.”
Rebekah’s silence did not surprise the princess one bit. She knew her tangent usually lasted a while and poor Rebekah could never get a word in edgewise. Zoe tried to take in slightly larger breaths as the knot was undone and the corset began to loosen against her chest.
“I know I’m being unreasonable. I don’t need a lecture.” She waved a hand in the air at her quiet friend. “His mother probably forced him. He thinks I’m dead...yeah, yeah.” Zoe let the corset be pulled over her head, happy to get rid of the offending piece of clothing.
Zoe let the corset fall from her hands and leaned her head against the window. Her words caught on the emotion in her voice, “But it still hurts, you know? Just because he thinks I’m gone doesn’t mean watching him with someone else makes it any easier. Maybe I should just tell him the truth. Get it all over with. Garrett hasn’t come back yet and I need a backup plan. What do you think?”
She lifted her head when the girl did not respond. “Becka?”
Zoe’s body stiffened when hands slid around her waist and pulled her back against a hard body. The princess sent a sideways glance at the knives that lay just out of reach on the table. If only she could get to them.
A hand pulled her braid to one side of her neck. She shivered at the breath against it. She moved her feet into a more stable position as she prepared to jam an elbow back at the intruder. Then her heart skipped a beat at the husky words whispered against the skin of her neck.
“I’m not Rebekah.”

    THE POST prompt:

    • Ten Reasons You Read Your Favorite Genre

    My answer
I have many genres I like and usually I read both YA and NA. My ten reasons for reading my favorite genres are:
1) In fantasy I love how the imagination of the author can create miracles.
2) In sci-fi I can travel through space and time!
3) In high fantasy, I fly with dragons and save princes (I wish I would but who cares!)
4) I can do reasearch through book for my own writing and stories.
5) Through different genres I can see the diversity of some characters and relate to them.
6) Despite their struggle and their emotional rollercoaster, all the characters of the books find their endings. If they are going to live happliy ever after or not, it depends on their choices.
7) The romance. How it blooms, withers or ignites like fire especially in some of my favorite series, like "The winner's curse".
8) Through books I got to know amazing people through Internet who share the same passion as me.
9) The fanart! There are amazing artists who can bring to life my favorite bookish characters.
10) Literature is a gift and a secret power for all of us. We get to dream hope and laugh all in the same time!

Blog Tour Review: "From Under the Mountain" by Cait Spivey

From Under The Mountain by Cait Spivey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

As the second child of the Aridan imperial family, nineteen-year-old Guerline knows exactly what is expected of her: be unobtrusive, be compliant, and do not fall in love with her low-born companion, Eva. She has succeeded at only two of those.

But before her feelings for Eva can become a point of contention for the royal house, Guerline's calm and narrow life is ripped away from her—in the course of a single night—and she is abruptly cast in the role of empress.

Faced with a council that aggressively fears the four witch clans charged with protecting Arido and believes they are, in fact, waging war against the humans, Guerline struggles to maintain order. As her control over the land crumbles, she learns that the war is rooted in a conflict much older than she realized—one centuries in the making, which is now crawling from under the mountain and into the light. With the fate of Arido hanging in the balance, Guerline must decide who to trust when even her closest councilors seem to have an agenda.

Darkly cinematic, From Under the Mountain pairs the sweeping landscape of epic fantasy with the personal journey of finding one’s voice in the world, posing the question: how do you define evil, when everything society tells you is a lie?

REVIEW

I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

It was an interesting premise, this book. A high fantasy with elements of an F/F relationship? I'd never seen it again. "From Under the Mountain" takes place in a fantasy empire where the borders are protected by Four clans of Witches. Each one has a role to play vital to the Empire, yet there is fear and hostility against them.

Guerline, Second to the throne and a member too shunned away by her own family finds herself heir to the throne after a turn of the events. Her friend, lover and Second in command Eva stays by her side as the political plots take place and an evil from under the mountain begins to stir. Not even the witches will expect it.

I liked the plot, the descriptions and the intesity of the relationships. Through the third POV we have many characters, many plot turns and the Gods who appeared were a nice add; a mix of pagan and werewolf type of divinity which was amazing and terrifying.

Guerline and Eva were great characters. Even in the end after the loss and the heartache they never stopped to amaze me. Although the ending was something like an open windows to a sequel, I mostly want to see what will happen to Guerline, especially after everything she's been through.

A great story with diversity and memorable characters.

Josiah is just crazy enough to believe that a fresh start is a good thing. But Parker has lived as prey, hunted by zombies and survivors before--and he knows that no one really survives.                                     EXCERPT REVEAL:

I was seven when I realized that the world wasn't always broken. That the way we live isn't how it's always been. I beat the shit out of the little asshole who broke that news to me, and then ran to the Doc's. Because she was always good for the truth. Even when the truth was ugly as fuck. I learned three things that day and it stuck with me, over the eleven years since.

Dusty Pate was fucking bully. Punching someone in the nose is a learned skill set. And the truth is better than a lie. Even when it's ugly. That thought more than any resounds through me as I stand on the rocking deck of a nameless boat in the middle of a nameless ocean, staring at a nameless coast. Not really. All of them have names. But none of them matter and there's no one left alive to give a fuck, so nameless works just as well. “what do you think?”

I tilt my head just a little as Parker comes up behind me, reaching over my shoulder for my binoculars. He fits there, as natural as breathing, as familiar as the gun on my hip and the knife strapped to my back. “I think we don't have a lot of choices.” He mutters a curse and from below, it's echoed in a shrill furious voice. “Any change in the princess?” I ask, my voice a low drawl. Parker doesn’t take the bait. He’s still watching the coast and I take a moment to drink him in. He’s still pale, even after the time on the boat, a kind of creamy paleness that begs to be dirtied. His straight black hair hanging in his dark eyes, and he’s tense.

Coiled like a spring that’s waiting to burst, full of nervous energy that has been forced down and contained. “No sign,” he murmurs. “We should go soon.” I nod. The truth is—I don’t like unknowns. I can patrol up and down the south eastern seaboard, in and around the deadzone. I’ve built my name on that. On my cold assessments and willingness to defend the Holdout. But I hate walking in blind. And I hate it most when Parker is with me.

New Adult Paranormal

With any great change, there is always strife, and the Covenant University has become the frontline between pure-bloods who want the Breed Order reinstated and the half-bloods who want the right to control their own destinies.

Fate has other plans.

The violence is escalating and war between the races seems inevitable, and it couldn’t come at a worse time. Hyperion may be out of commission, but Josie and Seth know they have only earned a reprieve.  Seth must get Josie fully prepared, which means controlling her newfound abilities, and they need to find the other demigods before the Titans do.

But the gods are sensing a greater threat.

Only one thing is more dangerous than a bunch of starved Titans, and that’s an out-of-control Apollyon. The aether in Josie is drawing Seth in deeper, and when lust mixes with love and gives way to power, he knows being close to her is not only dangerous to her, but to everyone around them, but letting her go requires a level of selflessness that just isn’t Seth’s style.

The paths taken in the past are becoming the roads of the future.

Just as chaos breaks out, familiar faces from the past return, complicating the already strained bond between Josie and Seth, and when the danger from the Titans erupts with devastating consequences, the dark allure of power calls to Seth again, but this time Josie might not be able to pull him back.

And when the struggle between power and love becomes the deadliest battleground, there may be no salvation.

About THE RETURN (Cover Attached):
The Return (Titan Series #1)
Spencer Hill Press
February 16th, 2015
New Adult Paranormal

The Fates are cackling their bony asses off…

It’s been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. And so far, the jobs they’ve given him have been violent and bloody–which is kind of all right with him. But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. He’s got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet.

Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy’s deal might be, but it’s a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to puree. Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of ancient myth is gunning for her.

But it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all.

Because history has once again been flipped to repeat.

REVIEW

Even since Veronica Rossi announced on her facebook page her inspiration pics for her new series, I was way beyond excited. Her "Under the Never Sky" series were the first books I've ever read, before I decided to start blogging. Needless to say those books maybe pushed me towards the blogging world.
"Riders" is quite different from her previous books. The story is about Gideon, a Ranger who after a death experience wakes up to find himself different and a gilr who needs his help so the Apocalyspe can stop.

Now you might think that this theme is told many times even from different angles. But Veronica Rossi succeed in delivering an adventure with funny dialogues, a very descriptive villain group and a romance that was slow burning and quite sad.

I liked that the POV was male. Gideon begins from the end and goes back and forth revealing how everything happened, how he met the other Riders of the Apocalypse and how his feelings for Darryn evolved.

The extra points of liking this book were the other Horsemen and their own abilities. Marcus is a dark skinned guy, Sebastian is a wannabe actor and Jode is a British golden boy. Lots of different characters so much funnier their interactions with Gideon.

I absolutely loved the horses. Any book that has horses in it (like "The Scorpio Races" by Maggie Stiefvater and "TITANS" by Victoria Scott) is a favorite. They have abilities, quite the intelligence and Gideon's horse is the best of all!

The final chapters felt too rushed for me though the action scenes repaid my patience. My only problem was how quickly Gideon trusted Darryn in the beginning of the book, though it was overcome by the refreshing male POV and Gideon's inner world.

It was a great read and I hope mostly to see more of all the Riders again. :)

About the author:

Veronica Rossi is a best selling author of fiction for young adults. Her debut novel, UNDER THE NEVER SKY, was the first in a post-apocalyptic trilogy. Released in January 2012, it was deemed one of the Best Books of Year by School Library Journal. The series appeared in the NY Times and USA Today best seller lists and was published in over 25 foreign markets.
Her second series for young adults will begin with RIDERS (publishing February 16, 2016), the story of four modern day teens who become incarnations of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, and the prophetic girl who brings them together.
Veronica completed her undergraduate studies at UCLA and then went on to study fine art at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. She is a lifelong reader and artist. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, she has lived in Mexico, Venezuela, and all over the United States, to finally settle in Northern California with her husband and two sons.
When not writing, Veronica enjoys reading (it’s worth repeating), painting, and running. She does NOT like anything involving numbers, the addition of them, subtraction of them, you name it. They terrify her. Her obsessions generally lead to fictional works. Currently, she’s delving deep in to Ancient Greece.

Since I wanted to interact with more readers, I did my research and created "Milky Way of Books".

Review: "Earth's End" (Air Awakens, #3) by Elise Kova

Earth's End by Elise Kova
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

A woman awoken in air, a soldier forged by fire, a weapon risen from blood.

Vhalla Yarl has made it to the warfront in the North. Forged by blood and fire, she has steeled her heart for the final battle of the Solaris Empire’s conquest. The choices before Vhalla are no longer servitude or freedom, they are servitude or death. The stakes have never been higher as the Emperor maintains his iron grip on her fate, holding everything Vhalla still has left to lose in the balance.

THE AIR AWAKENS SERIES (click the covers)

REVIEW

In the heart pounding sequel of the acclaimed series "Air Awakens", Vhalla will have to win a war if she wants her freedom back.

Now I know that many of you were left in a horrible cliffhanger at the end of the previous book but I assure you that this IS solved! Of course the possibilities were 50-50 and I really hoped that the series wouldn't turn to the equivalent of the YA Game of Thrones-like "Falling Kingdoms" series. That would be really horrible.

So Vhalla has to fight, her powers are quite strong and a certain Prince will do anything for her. There is no boring moment in the book and it is also filled with knowldege of the mythical continent Vhalla lives in. Her job as a library apprentice earns her many points and for once I was glad a bookworm made army men squirm from discomfort (hurraah)!

The Emperor is the most hated character which I hope yo already know. Well you'll loath him even more in the end of the book. Which adds him to my top list of hated Emperors in my YA Read List. That list includes the Emperors from "The Winner's Kiss" and "Throne of Glass" too.

Did I like the book?
No, I loved it.

Did it gut me in the end like the previous one did?
Yup, I cried buckets.

BUT Elise Kova has written an amazing story and as her series continues I can't help but admire how great her writing is and how amazingly she writes about emotions on her characters. This book was a solid 5 star for me and I am hoping to get my grabby hands to the next one too!

About the author:

Elise Kova has always had a passion for storytelling. She wrote her first novella, a high-fantasy, in sixth grade. Over the years she's honed her love of literature with everything from fantasy to romance, science fiction to mystery, and whatever else catches her eye.

Elise lives in Saint Petersburg, Florida, where she's currently working on the next installment in her debut YA fantasy series: Air Awakens. She enjoys video games, anime, table-top role playing games, and many other forms of "geekdom."

REVIEW

If I had to count how many sci-fi novels made me laugh so hard, they wouldn't even be more than seven (adding in "The Lunar Chronicles" of course). Melissa Landers has proved how you can combine humor, soft core scifi elements and romance all in one book, which has unstoppable adventure and a fluffy cute pet.

This is the story of Solara, an orphan girl who is also a brilliant mechanic and has tattoos which shun her as a felon. Looking for a better life outside Earth, towards the outer zones of space, she joins Doran, a rich selfish boy in his cruise.

Now you'd really expect them to have a great time fighting with each other but when circumstances force them to join the Banshee and its crew, then they have signed up for more than they have paid.

I enjoyed every part of the book and I am not reffering only to the main characters. The Captain, Cassia and Kane, Renny add more spice and humor to the adventure, not to mention that everyone has their secrets. What I also enjoyed was the hate-to-love relationship which formed between Solara and Doran. It was great for a change to see two characters begin as enemies, then turn to a romantic relationship. It felt more real and had its moments.

I can't wait to read the next book and I am eager to see how the new POVs of Cassia and Kane will be!
