Review: "The Gentleman's Guide to Vice & Virtue" (Guide #1) by Mackenzi Lee

The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

An unforgettable tale of two friends on their Grand Tour of 18th-century Europe who stumble upon a magical artifact that leads them from Paris to Venice in a dangerous manhunt, fighting pirates, highwaymen, and their feelings for each other along the way.

Henry “Monty” Montague was born and bred to be a gentleman, but he was never one to be tamed. The finest boarding schools in England and the constant disapproval of his father haven’t been able to curb any of his roguish passions—not for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits, or waking up in the arms of women or men.

But as Monty embarks on his grand tour of Europe, his quest for a life filled with pleasure and vice is in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy.

Still it isn’t in Monty’s nature to give up. Even with his younger sister, Felicity, in tow, he vows to make this yearlong escapade one last hedonistic hurrah and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty’s reckless decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt that spans across Europe, it calls into question everything he knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.

Witty, romantic, and intriguing at every turn, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is a sumptuous romp that explores the undeniably fine lines between friendship and love.

REVIEW

So, what do you do when you have historical elements, a hilarious cast and an Indiana Jones-like quest? You get this beauty of a book! "The Gentleman's Guide to Vice & Virtue" (TGGTVV) follows Monty and Percy who are noblemen, leaving London for their Tour around Europe.

Now this is where the plot thickens! Monty is in love with Percy, but fears he doesn't love him back, they both have horrible families and there may or may not be a grand conspiracy concerning thr French Crown.
Add in Monty's amazing POV, which made me laugh more than once, and you have this little beauty. Honestly, I'm surprised there's not much fanart going around this pair!

(Art belongs to artist. It's the best I've found so far!)

And Felicity! A girl who wants to be a scientist, doesn't comform with the society she lives in and she wants adventure, even if it kicks her back.

I'll definitely re-read this, as also find the audiobook. Plus, despite the author taking freedom in some historical matters, there is also a nice detailed guide in the end of the book where Mackenzi explains all the historical tibbits, you may be interested in!

She is also the author of BYGONE BADASS BROADS (Abrams, 2018), a collection of short biographies of amazing women from history you probably don't know about but definitely should, based on her popular twitter series of the same name.

Blog Tour+ARC Review+Giveaway: "Monster Among Roses" (Fairy Tale Quartet #1) by Linda Kage

Will you dare to gaze upon the monster among the roses?

MONSTER AMONG THE ROSES
Fairy Tale Quartet #1
Linda Kage
Releasing July 24, 2017

“Do you know how to get to the rose garden?”
“No, you can’t go there. A monster lives there.”

Shaw Hollander is desperate.

Broke, unemployed, and determined to help his ailing mother, he falls on the good graces of a wealthy benefactor who is willing to give Shaw a job at his mansion in order to pay off his mother’s debts. Suddenly finding himself surrounded by lavish riches, he has no idea what his duties truly entail until he’s sent to the rose garden and meets the tragically mutilated Isobel.

This Beauty and the Beast story holds true to the core of the fable while shaking off the element of fantasy and dragging it into present day reality. Shaw and Isobel are ready to let you climb into their four-wheel-drive pickup and take a ride with them into their version of happily ever after, but only if you first dare to gaze upon the monster among the roses.

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I am a sucker for every reteliing of Beauty and the Beast! And after seeing that Linda Kage, one of my most favorite authors was writing one, I couldn't help but jump from excitement!

Shaw and Isobel were a great couple, even if they had quite a rough start. In fact, I didn't like Isobel much at first but after seeing how deep her emotional scars went, I warmed up to her.

Now Shaw on the other hand was a sweet, caring character, even funny. He loves reading and even tries to make shelves for Isobel and her library (which id the CUTEST!)

I truly enjoyed the book and I seriously can't wait for the next one, which seems to be inspired by Cinderella.

Women often say a good man is hard to find. And a hard man is even better.

That’s why I’m quite a catch— good, hard, loaded, and wait for it…I’m ready to settle down too. But the woman I want to pitch my tent with is precisely the one I need to stay far away from.

After that fantastic night with Mia Summers, I’m ready to give her many more. But there’s a hitch in my plans — she just hired my company. If there’s one thing I’m committed to, it’s running a squeaky clean adventure tour business. One of the iron-clad rules?

Blog Tour+ARC Review+Excerpt: "Trust" by Kylie Scott

Being young is all about the experiences: the first time you skip school, the first time you fall in love…the first time someone holds a gun to your head.

After being held hostage during a robbery at the local convenience store, seventeen year old Edie finds her attitude about life shattered. Unwilling to put up with the snobbery and bullying at her private school, she enrolls at the local public high school, crossing paths with John. The boy who risked his life to save hers.

While Edie’s beginning to run wild, however, John’s just starting to settle down. After years of partying and dealing drugs with his older brother, he’s going straight—getting to class on time, and thinking about the future.

An unlikely bond grows between the two as John keeps Edie out of trouble and helps her broaden her horizons. But when he helps her out with another first—losing her virginity—their friendship gets complicated.

Meanwhile, Edie and John are pulled back into the dangerous world they narrowly escaped. They were lucky to survive the first time, but this time they have more to lose—each other.

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I've been a fan of Kylie Scott's writing since the "Dive Bar" series, which is a NA. But seeing her writing a YA, I couldn't be more excited to get the chance and review the ARC of this book!

"Trust" is about two different people, from different sides of life who couldn't be more similar at heart. Edie is a unique mix of goodness and sass, who loves her body just as it is. She also gets bullied at school (something I deeply relate to), and after the events at the beginning of the book, she enrolls into a public high school.

John on the other hand, after all the rumors he has, tries to be a fine example of a student, get his head straight and tries not to get into trouble. As the two come closer together a bond fomrs.

The beauty of this book was the fact that Edie and John started as friends. The romance does not overshadow the plot and you have genuine teenage angst, friendship and heart-ache. I would love to see Kylie Scott try herself more into the YA writing! ;)

EXCERPT
“You were going to give it up to Duncan Dickerson?” he sneered. “Are you serious?”
I halted, staring at him. This was not good. “How do you know about that?”
“Anders overheard you and Hang talking.”
“Bastard.”
“Well?” he demanded, acting all authoritarian. Idiot.
“To be fair, I didn’t know his last name was Dickerson,” I said. “That’s unfortunate. Though, I wasn’t actually planning on marrying him, so . . .”
“Not funny.”
I shrugged.
“You barely know the guy.”
“Um, yeah. None of your concern. We’re not talking about this.” How mortifying! My face burned bright. People should just gather around and cook s’mores. “I appreciate that we’re friends. You mean a lot to me. But this is going to have to fall under definitely none of your damn business, so go away please.”
“We’re talking about it.” He advanced a step.
“No we are not.” And I retreated.
“You were going to let a complete stranger touch you.” Advance.
Retreat. “People do it all the time. You do it all the time.”
“But you don’t,” he said, taking the final step, backing me up against the side of his car and getting all in my face. “Edie, this is your first time we’re talking about. Isn’t it?”
“Yes, and it’s going to be messy and painful and probably horribly embarrassing and I just want it over and done with.” I tried to meet his eyes but failed, settling for a spot on his right shoulder. “You’re not a girl; you wouldn’t understand. Also, last time I checked, you’re not the gatekeeper of my hymen, John Cole. So back the fuck off.”
He said nothing.
Deep, calming breaths. “Look, someday I’ll meet someone I really like and we’ll have a deep and meaningful relationship and go at it like bunnies. But I don’t want to be the dumb virgin in that scenario.”
He slowly shook his head.
“Also, I do not want to die a virgin.”
“What? What the hell are you talking about?”
“Hey, you and I both know death can occur at any time.”
“This is crazy.”
“I’m seeing a therapist!” I told his shoulder. “I don’t know if you noticed, but I’m a little bit messed up these days. It’s hard for me to trust people. That’s not going to change anytime soon.”
He screwed up his face at me. “Wha—”
“I’m just trying to be practical.”
“Well, you’re being ridiculous. None of this makes sense.”
“It does to me.”
Again, he said nothing.
In fact, he said nothing for so long that I finally looked him in the eye. The anger had left him, replaced by an emotion I didn’t recognize. Worst of all, he still smelled like summer. A little sweat and the open night air, everything I loved. Liked. I meant liked.
“What?” I said, finally.
He let loose a breath. “I’ll do it.”

Milky Way of Books Recommends: Books where the hero enters and/or jumps from a book!

Hello and welcome to the first post (officially) where I recommend titles! I decided to do something like this until I can finally snap out of my reviewing slump.

Which I think exists!

Anyway, this post is about books where the portagonist either enters a book, or a character from the book comes to life or jumps out of the book. I'll include titles I've already read and few I wish to read!

Between the Lines series by Jodi Picoult

Summary from GoodReads

Delilah is a bit of a loner who prefers spending her time in the school library with her head in a book—one book in particular. Between the Lines may be a fairy tale, but it feels real. Prince Oliver is brave, adventurous, and loving. He really speaks to Delilah.

And then one day Oliver actually speaks to her. Turns out, Oliver is more than a one-dimensional storybook prince. He’s a restless teen who feels trapped by his literary existence and hates that his entire life is predetermined. He’s sure there’s more for him out there in the real world, and Delilah might just be his key to freedom.

A romantic and charming story, this companion novel to Off the Page will make every reader believe in the fantastical power of fairy tales.

The book is one of the many which have been sitting on my TBR list. I'm looking still for a good paperback copy in Greece, before buying online. Alas, it's hard to find the English version and easy to find the translated in Greek expensive one.

I think this book is sweet and a 'classic' on this category. There is also the second book which has a beautiful cover!

The Librarian by Christi Sloat

Summary from GoodReads

He’s from 1892 England, she’s in a small library in 2017. And that's just the start of their troubles.

Emme never meant to stay in Maine. She'd come only to find a librarian for her Gram's library, a custodian for the collection of mysterious books she'd promised to protect. On a dark, wintery night, alone in the library, she takes her first glance into one of the antique novels and finds herself transported to 1892 England staring into the eyes of handsome and dashing hero Jack Ridgewell. As each chapter passes she learns you can truly fall in love with a character in a book, that book boyfriends are real and Emme must choose between the real world, and his.

When the last page is read he's gone and Emme feels the cold loneliness of lost love. Will she find Jack again, or will their love be forever lost? The answer lies within the pages…

This is what a book lover's love life looks like, if you could truly love a book character. I really want to read this book since it also carries a historical element and has a sweet cover!

This little gem is quite similar to Inkheart, yet the scenery takes place into many different books! The hook line of this book was at the beginning where Sherlock Holmes suddenly disappears!

Inkheart series by Cornelia Funke

Summary from GoodReads

Twelve-year-old Meggie learns that her father, who repairs and binds books for a living, can "read" fictional characters to life when one of those characters abducts them and tries to force him into service.

Characters from books literally leap off the page in this engrossing fantasy. Meggie has had her father to herself since her mother went away when she was young. Mo taught her to read when she was five, and the two share a mutual love of books. He can "read" characters out of books. When she was three, he read aloud from a book called Inkheart and released characters into the real world. At the same time, Meggie's mother disappeared into the story. This "story within a story" will delight not just fantasy fans, but all readers who like an exciting plot with larger-than-life characters.

I admit it; I saw the movie first, THEN read the book. I still need to finish the series though as also find the books. BUT, I am very jealous of Mo's ability to 'read' characters into life! Imagine what would happen if we could bring some of our favorite characters into life!

Here're few fine examples:

Summary from GoodReads

Twenty-year-old Eloise has learned all she can from the School, where characters live until joining their novels. No one knows genre and plot structure better than her, but despite her knowledge, she’s yet to be assigned to her own story. All her friends are off starting their lives with their authors—and if Eloise doesn’t get assigned soon, she’ll fade away, forgotten by all.

When she is offered a job at the Recording Office, instead, she takes the chance to write her own future. Suddenly living among the post-storied, Eloise meets Barnaby Fitzwilliam, a former romance novel hero who hasn’t lost any of his in-story charm. But just as their relationship begins to get serious, Eloise is sucked into a novel she was never meant to be part of, turning everything they thought they knew about their world upside down.

Now, caught where the only rules are made by authors and truly anything is possible, Eloise must find her way back home—or her life might end before she ever gets the chance to live it.

Set in an intriguing, unique world, OFF BOOK explores the story beneath the stories we all know and love, taking readers and characters alike on an adventure just waiting to be written.

This underappreciated book follow the struggles of characters. Authors create in their minds the characters they want, but what happen when the story ends? Where do these characters go? And if an author 'kills' a character, does this character survive to retirement?

The book is smart and funny with doses of knowledge in tropes and genres too!

The Accidental Turn series by J.M. Frey

Summary from GoodReads

Forsyth Turn is not a hero. Lordling of Turn Hall and Lysse Chipping, yes. Spymaster for the king, certainly. But hero? That’s his older brother’s job, and Kintyre Turn is nothing if not legendary. However, when a raid on the kingdom’s worst criminal results in the rescue of a bafflingly blunt woman, oddly named and even more oddly mannered, Forsyth finds his quaint, sedentary life is turned on its head.

Dragged reluctantly into a quest he never expected, and fighting villains that even his brother has never managed to best, Forsyth is forced to confront his own self-shame and the demons that come with always being second-best. And, more than that, when he finally realizes where Lucy came from and why she’s here, he’ll be forced to question not only his place in the world, but the very meaning of his own existence.

Smartly crafted, The Untold Tale gives agency to the unlikeliest of heroes: the silenced, the marginalized, and the overlooked. It asks what it really means to be a fan when the worlds you love don't resemble the world you live in, celebrates the power of the written word, challenges tropes, and shows us what happens when someone stands up and refuses to remain a secondary character in their own life.

Now THIS is a book lover's dream come true, but with the bad things that can also happen to you! Forsyth is a book character and through his eyes we see how Lucy Pip tries to survive into his world. This book is categorized as meta-fiction fantasy where all the tropes we love and hate in the genre come together in a masterful battle tearing at each other!

I'd seriously love to have this book as audiobook too, or a graphic novel!

The second book of the series is also about books, but a sinister evil makes all the existing books in our world disappear!

There are also novellas set in this world, with a good dose of LGBT themes in it! You'll never get bored with these books! ;)

Side note: the villain in this series is horrible, like Amarantha/Erawan horrible!

What do you think? Do you have any books which are similar to the ones above? Any recs for me? I'd love to hear from you!
